The old bascule span continues to have serious maintenance problems. A large chunk of concrete broke away this year, leaving this gaping hole (actually the hole was smaller but had to be widened for repairs). The asphalt is likewise an ongoing demand for repair since the underlayment is wood, not a surface that asphalt binds to, especially in summer heat.
